Welcome to our growing collection of garden terms! I've gathered these words from conversations with my own little gardeners and questions I hear from other parents. Each definition is written with young gardeners in mind, but includes the proper terminology to help them grow into confident garden enthusiasts.
Basic Garden Terms
Tools and Equipment
Trowel: Your garden's tiny shovel - perfect for digging holes for seeds and small plants
Watering Can: A special container for giving plants their daily drink
Garden Fork: Like a tiny pitchfork that helps loosen soil and remove weeds
Rake: A tool that helps gather leaves and smooth out soil, like a big garden comb
Wheelbarrow: A garden cart that helps carry soil, plants, and tools
Plant Parts
Seed: A tiny package that contains everything needed to grow a new plant
Root: The underground part of the plant that drinks water and holds it steady
Stem: The plant's body that holds it up tall and strong
Leaf: The plant's solar panels that catch sunlight to help it grow
Flower: The colorful part of the plant that attracts pollinators and makes seeds
Fruit: The part of the plant that protects the seeds (yes, even tomatoes are fruits!)
Garden Basics
Soil: The special dirt that plants grow in (not just any dirt will do!)
Compost: Nature's recipe for super-food for plants, made from kitchen scraps and garden materials
Mulch: A protective blanket for the soil that helps keep plant roots cozy
Pollination: When insects like bees help flowers make seeds by carrying pollen
Annual: Plants that grow, bloom, and complete their lifecycle in one year
Perennial: Plants that come back year after year, like old friends
Garden Care
Watering: Giving plants the right amount of water to help them grow
Weeding: Removing unwanted plants that might steal water and food from your garden friends
